You know what’s better than a good cup of coffee? A great cup of coffee. And you know what makes a great cup of coffee? Not being bitter.
Bitterness is a common occurrence in coffee. It’s part of coffee’s flavor profile, and it’s what makes coffee taste like coffee! But sometimes, coffee can be a bit too bitter—and luckily, there are ways to help prevent bitterness and fix your bitter-tasting brews. Here are some tips to help you make your coffee less bitter, as well as how to troubleshoot the problem after your coffee has already been brewed.
1) Use filtered water. This will help remove any extra minerals from the water that can affect the taste of your brew.
2) Use freshly roasted beans. Coffee beans lose their flavor and aroma quickly once they’ve been ground up and exposed to air. So if you want a rich, full-bodied cup of coffee, make sure it’s freshly ground!
3) Grind your own beans right before brewing. The longer ground coffee sits around, the more bitter it becomes—which is why we recommend grinding just before brewing!
4) Adding salt can help counterbalance bitterness. While there is no specific amount of salt you should use, you may want to experiment with adding a pinch of salt and reducing the amount of bitter ingredients until you get it just right.
