Our story is about community.

Welcome to Nueva Segovia

While only 30 hectares in size, our farm, Finca Los Angeles produces about 10,000 pounds of coffee a year, and every single bag is special. We don’t offer a ton of different coffees; instead, we specialize in quality before quantity and variety.

Where it all began

Our family moved to the mountains of Nueva Segovia during the Nicaraguan Civil War of the 1970’s. In a safe-haven on a coffee farm, we cultivated vegetables and fruits in order to provide for our family. We learned important lessons during that time: how to make the best of a situation, always have a positive mindset of the future, and be grateful for what you have.

In 2012, we returned to Nueva Segovia and had an opportunity to purchase land and dive into our long-lasting love – coffee. The first year was difficult as we built our farm from scratch. We started small with just 4 acres and about 10 trees planted on each acre.  Since then, we’ve expanded our farm to about 75 trees per acre (which is more than seven times what it used to be).

Moving against the tide

You might be surprised to learn that most of the coffee you drink in Los Angeles is not locally roasted or sustainably sourced.

Locally roasted means better for farmers, better for the planet and better for you.

Out of every dollar you spend on Reyes coffee, sixty eight cents will go back into the local community.

When you buy Reyes coffee you are supporting the innovation of specialty coffee.

How it happens

Harvesting

Reyes Coffee currently employs about 20 farmers at it’s Nueva Segovia farm.

The harvest begins in November and lasts until April or May of each year.

Workers pick ripe cherries from the trees by hand.

Coffee is processed at a local washing station and arrives in Los Angeles around June.

Roasting

We roast to order in small batches of around 10 kg at a time, right here in Los Angeles.

We roast our beans in lighter and medium profiles to bring out different flavors.

We package our coffee in biodegradables bags because they’re better for the environment.

After we’ve roasted your coffee, we let it degas for 24 hours before shipping it. The reason is that the coffee needs enough time after roasting to degas before it can be enjoyed.

Wholesale

We believe that no one company can do it all, so we focus on being a part of the bigger coffee community in Los Angeles.

We support specialty coffee through partnerships with coffee professionals and passionate businesses across the city.

We love coming up with ways to bring specialty coffee to market, from developing unique gifts to bringing coffee to new places.

We think we are all on this coffee-loving journey together. It’s why we want to extend our wholesale partnerships to you.
